This workshop will explore the ethical considerations of touch in child psychotherapy and play therapy including a historical look at touch, research, cultural considerations, and implications regarding touch in therapy sessions. The different types of touch in the playroom will be reviewed as well as recommended guidelines regarding ethical dilemmas and boundary setting. Through experiential activities participants will have an opportunity to expand personal awareness and biases regarding touch. Participants will be introduced to how respectful touched-based therapies can be ethically implemented in practice, as exampled through a new Developmental Play Therapy approach, FirstPlayTM Therapy.

Trauma is often the underlying factor in the social, emotional and behavioral problems of children.  Trauma informed care is imperative for children.  This workshop is designed to provide a functional understanding of trauma and its pervasive, long-term impact on young children. A trauma informed approach will change how you work with children, your view children and how you see the play.  It will increase professionals’ understanding of the effect of trauma on the developing brain of young children and its impact on all areas of development and social emotional wellness. How trauma is revealed through play and play therapy interventions that address trauma will be discussed. Video and case studies will be used to explore trauma and children. Learning Objectives: 1-Understand trauma and its impact on children’s social emotional wellness 2-Understand the effect of trauma on all areas of child development and brain structure 3- Recognize how trauma is manifested in behavior and play of young children 4- Understand how play therapy techniques address trauma symptoms
